WHAT DOES MEAN MSC?
MSC – Marine Stewardship Council means in a generic way “Council for the Conservation of the Oceans”, is an independent,
international and non-profit organization, founded in 1992 in order to solve the problem of overfishing. Many oceans have high rates of overfishing, and it’s leading to a
drastic reduction in fish stocks. This is harmful to the marine ecosystem as well as for the fish industry, worldwide. This organization develops an environmental standard
that allows to evaluate rigorously all the fishing companies around the world.
Its basic principles are:
THE FISH RESERVES STATE – Fishing should be done to prevent overfishing and the extinction of reserves.
CONSEQUENCES OF FISH IN THE SEA – Fishing should respect the ecosystem of the oceans, not damaging its structure, productivity, diversity and functionality.
FISHERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS – Each fish company must prove the existence of a management system that complies with local, national and international laws and
directives. Fishery products containing the eco-label follow a normal environment, this label indicates that they result from a system of certification that contributes to the
health of the oceans around the world and preserves the future of fish stocks and sustainable fishing practices.
